AMA Queensland provides workplace relations support for all doctors working in the public health system. Our core business is lobbying State and Federal Government decision-makers to ensure doctors have a safe, fair and equitable working environment.
In conjunction with our union partner, the Australian Salaried Medical Officers Federation Queensland (ASMOFQ), AMA Queensland offers representation for visiting medical officers (VMOs) during award and contract negotiations, industrial disputes and issues of public health policy. We fight to improve and maintain the working rights and conditions of doctors employed in the public health system.
AMA Queensland, in partnership with ASMOFQ via the AMA Queensland VMO Committee, is currently in discussions with Queensland Health about negotiating a new award and certified agreement for VMOs. Throughout this process we will continue to consult with and represent our members to achieve a fair and equitable agreement which will form VMOs employment entitlements
Currently we are focused on several important issues affecting all public health employees:
- ongoing opportunities for clinical training;
- the proposed privatisation and contestability of publicly-funded health services;
- tax-cap on self-funded education expenses;
- job security and budget cuts;
- the development of efficient and transparent billing processes; and
- improved management of patient complaints.
AMA Queensland’s VMOs can have peace of mind knowing that they can access unlimited, free access to the support of our Workplace Relations Team who can assist members to understand Queensland Health’s complex employment contracts and billing processes.
Rural VMO Recruitment and Retention Fund
Following the signing of the VMO Agreement 2011, a Ministerial Taskforce Committee met and agreed to establish the Rural VMO Recruitment and Retention Fund. The fund formed part of the outcome of negotiations for terms and conditions for VMOs and represents an endeavour in the VMO Agreement 2011 to assist in recruiting VMOs and retain their services. VMOs are encouraged to contact AMA Queensland for details of the agreement, including conditions of employment.
AMA Queensland VMO Committee
In order to influence change, AMA Queensland has established a VMO Committee. The committee is compromised of VMOs employed by Queensland Health, the Mater Hospital (check?) and a wide range of specialities working in the private sector.
